Collected news and discussion about Hewlett-Packard printers (including LaserJet, DeskJet, ThinkJet, PCL, PJL, etc.) ........................................................................ >>> HP OFFERS DESKJET/DESKWRITER REPAIR KITS <<< 1/27/95 Source: "Infoworld," January 16, 1995 Hewlett-Packard (HP) is offering a repair kit for some of its DeskJet and DeskWriter printers to correct a problem with paper feeding. HP has discovered that after a long period of use, the paper pickup rollers on the printers become slick and will no longer grab paper out of the tray. The result is an error message stating that the printer is out of paper, even though there is paper in the tray. The offending printers were manufactured between June 1993 and March 1994, and include the DeskJet 550C and 560C, and DeskJet and DeskWriter 510 and 520 models. Only those with serial numbers beginning with "US3" and "US43" exhibit the problem. Registered owners should have been informed about how to obtain the repair kit; if you have one of these printers and haven't heard from HP, you can call the firm at 1-800/656-2324. ........................................................................ Old HP parts typically are done on an exchange basis (like automobile "core" parts), so when you order the part, you pay MORE than the part itself is going to cost (in my case, $70 is the part, but the bill was $245 incl. shipping and tax), and the core charge is refunded when you return the old part to HP (so they can recondition it and sell it to someone else). Four screws and two phone calls is all it took me. The VAX is running VMS 5.4-2 which is too early to support DECprint Supervisor. I can probably figure out the cabling to connect the printer to an MMJ port, until we get a DECserver on the new network. The connection would probably involve a BC16E cable with an H8575E adaptor. However, I'm not sure about the driver needed. VMS won't support HP's PCL-3 on versions under 5.5-x will it? I imagine I'll have to get some third party software like Gray Matter's ScriptServer. I know ScriptServer works for PostScript and HPGL, but I'm not sure about PCL-3. Does anyone know of information they could point me to. I've checked the FAQ for VMS, Printers and specifically the HP FAQ. None of the sources seem to have VMS and PCL in the same sentence. 800-DIGITAL told me to ask HP. I'll do that next. I suspect you're used to the PC model of things, in which every printer you choose comes with some kind of special printer driver. This is not, in general, the case on VMS. HP PCL printers require minimal support from the host. By way of contrast, Postscript printers have two complications, neither of which apply to PCL: The can't print straight ASCII at all, just Postscript; and they need a two-way path to the host, since they send back status information that you're likely to want to see. PCL printers basically print straight ASCII (with some embedded control codes), and require at most that the system support the XON/XOFF protocol, or some other line restraint mechanism. If you simply connect the DeskJet to your VAX, you can begin printing immedi- ately. Of course, you'll get the default fonts and spacing parameters, but as a simple "line printer", a PCL printer will work with no effort at all. Beyond that, it's all a question of what you want to support. Even with just a simple, direct connection and no special software, you can prepare files that contain PCL command sequences and print in alternate fonts, produce graphics, whatever. Programs to produce such files need have no special connection to VMS. For example, if you use TeX, you would need a DVI-to-PCL converter. That converter - a couple of implementations exist; I still use Nelson Beebe's classic one - is a stand-alone program that reads a .DVI file and produces a .LJ (or whatever) file. You then take the .LJ file and PRINT it through the normal VMS spooler, specifying /PASSALL to tell the spooler to send it as uninterpreted binary data. There are levels in between. The standard VMS symbionts are perfectly capable of sending setup modules to send the command sequences a PCL printer needs to select alternate fonts, landscape mode, whatever. Sets of such modules have been posted to INFO-VAX many times, and are probably available in the archives by now. The one classic "gotcha'" with PCL printers is the "extra blank sheet of paper" that is the result of the standard symbiont trying to send the printer to the top of a page when in fact it is already there. This, too, has been discussed many times here before. -- Jerry Article 34947 of comp.sys.dec: Path: cs.utk.edu!gatech!news.mathworks.com!news4.ner.bbnplanet.net!news3.near.net!chaos.dac.neu.edu!camelot.ccs.neu.edu!gbcacm From: gbcacm@ccs.neu.edu (Peter Sherwood) Newsgroups: comp.sys.dec Subject: Re: VAX to HP4si escape sequence question Date: 5 Sep 1995 20:23:23 GMT Organization: College of Computer Science, Northeastern University. Thanks Yes, as long as that color is black :-) The 850C and 855C are 300 dpi for cyan, magenta and yellow. However, what the 85x can do, that (as far as I know) no other current HP color printer can do (including the 1600C) is fire up to 4 ink drops on each 1/300th spot. Prior and present HP color inkjets only do two drops. This means that best-quality output on the 85x is about twice any other "300 dpi color" HP printer. This is consistent with output I've compared from my DJ560C and 855C. When evaluating the "dpi claim wars", keep in mind that for continuous tone real-world images, the real measure is not monotone DPI, but rather: what is the effective color depth at 200 dpi. Photographic prints have about 200 dpi res, so that's the gold standard. 300-vs-600-vs-720-vs-1200 matters for text (and hi-res monotone line art), assuming, of course, that the "dpi" claims are real, and apply to both positioning increments and ink drop size. I recall seeing an HP document (a press release possibly, this info is not in the data sheet) that states that the 85x can print "64 colors" on each 1/300th spot. That's 6 bits/pixel at 300 dpi, or 540,000 bits/sq.in. That maps to: Bits/ DPI Pixel Colors 300 6 64 260 8 256 200 13.5 11K 184 16 65K "HiColor" 150 24 16M "TruColor" 24 bits @ 150 dpi is "near photographic" in my book, and that's all HP claims for this printer. These numbers are twice what I calculated for the 560C, and prints of test patterns bear them out. I'd like to see similar numbers for competing printers. Of course, numbers alone aren't the whole story. The halftone patterns used, the dye chromaticities/stability, color corrections available, mechanism jitter and many other factors have major impact on the results. The HP "scatter" dither, new ink formulations for the 85x, and the ColorSmart driver modes are crucial in getting consistent and pleasing results from photo images. One trick, if you need help with a jet direct question, call the hp support # and ask for jet direct support up front. It'll save you some time. Anyway, this is their response. The JET-DIRECT print solution is a window's solution. It's not designed to be managed from DOS!!! They may or may not come up with a fix for this problem.. 2 "work-arounds" were discussed. 1. Connect the printer to the lpt port on a networked pc. You can then "capture" one of your lpt ports, and direct it through the networked pc, and to it's lpt port. My problem with this is I'm still limited by the length of a parallel cable, the print server pc has to be on to print, and why in hell did I pay $400 for the jetdirect option. 2. A more workable workaround, and what I'm using now is this. Before going into your DOS app, go into your printer window, click on properties, and set it to print to lpt1. Then click on "pause printing". You should see "PAUSED" in the top of the printer window. From your DOS app, print what you like. You will see the print jobs spool up in the paused que. WAIT UNTIL THE JOBS STOP SPOOLING. Then, back in the printer window, click on properties, and change it back to print to the networked printer, the printer will "un"pause automatically. This second option isn't as bad as it sounds, after you use it a few times, and it beats running a 25' printer cable across the office floor. Although, it's not what the salesman promised me when I bought the printer. Also make sure you've got the latest jet-admin software, 3 files needed JA95_1.EXE, JA95_2.EXE, and JA95_3.EXE. I'm pretty sure those are the file names. Their available at the hp site on the net. There's also a readme file that expains how to use them. Hope this helps. My first impression is: a very nice printer! They have taken the best parts from HP4M (the box), HP4MP (speed, power saving, economode) and HP4SiMX (resource savings, job multitasking, I/O buffers, optional duplex)! The 4M Plus is a HP4 box, at 12 ppm, 600dpi, new controller (i80960@25MHz+cache, like in HP4MP), 6MB ram, new PostScript (2013.111), MEt, RET, includes new JetDirect card (the 4Si one PLUS LocalTalk plug and lpd support (NEW) on the same card, 1MB flash eprom for upgrade), economode, auto power down (adjustable from 5mn to 2 hours), serial and parallel I/F. Rated to 20000 pages per month. When you print a file, the first thing you see is speed; the next one, depending on the file, is ... the number of grey levels. HP advertizes 122 levels (in PostScript, 120 in PCL) and it is TRUE! I have a file which prints a circle of 256 slices of grey and they are almost not distinguishable!! Very very amazing! The nicer printout i have ever seen (i have not seen 1200dpi..). Some performance results: PPST31: 43.5 76.2 (G) 54.9 (R) 22.5 (M) PPST32: 17.0 133.4 (G) 6.7 (R) 23.9 (M) [HP4M: 7.1, HP4MP: 8.3, HP4SiMX: 24.3] laser doctor: 5.434 A 500 sheet tray is optional, along with duplex unit and a 1000 sheet receiver in Q3 1994 (not for old HP4). Should be available starting May 2 around same price than previous HP4 price. of course, the (in)famous bug is no longer there (nor in HP4MP). No more new laser printer this time, but see you later in september! The new JetDirect card is also available in a standalone box, to connect to a parallel interface (printer side). But I'd like to verify a few things with you. What follows assumes that your are indeed using either the original LaserJet 4 or the 4 plus: First, take the printer offline by pushing the online button. Press the 'Menu' button several times until you see 'CONFIG MENU'. Press the 'Item' button and the display should read 'MP TRAY = (something)'. Change the display to read 'MP TRAY = CASS'. Press the 'Enter' button to save this change. Place the printer back online so it says 00 READY. Now, on the top row of keys on the printer, press the 'Paper Size' button. It should say 'MP TRAY = (something)'. Change it to 'MP TRAY = LETTER' and press enter to save. Press the 'Paper Size' button again to make it read 00 READY again. The printer should now be set up to _know_ that you've got A4 paper in the Paper Cassette (PC TRAY) and Letter paper in the Multi-Purpose Tray (MP TRAY). If you have the optional 500 sheet feeder (LC TRAY) you can have it set to whatever you want. If a file (job), with a 'US Letter' size embedded in the print code, is sent to the printer, it will automatically pull the paper in the MP TRAY (it's up to you to verify that Letter sized paper is loaded in that tray). Of course, if an A4 job is sent to the printer, it will pull from the PC TRAY. Hope this is what you were after... Jerry V. The culprit is a file called 'lpt.vxd'. The one in the win95 cab files is no good. I have heard that the one included on the CD version of windows in the drivers directory (NOT in the cab files) is the updated non-buggy version, but for a sure fix download and install the Windows95 service pack available for free download at www.microsoft.com. The service pack updates this and many other parts of the system that have been repaired since the release of 95. Since you are there anyway, I would also suggest getting the kernel update that is also available for download. Here is why. 1) The paper jams frequently. It's worse than a toothache. If you never experienced toothache, then let's just say that it's so painful that you would get a gun and shoot it. 2) The feeder is frequently having problem feeding paper. This problem is not as bad as paper jamming, because once you get the feeder sweetened up, you are likely to be free until the next reload. But may be not. 3) The printer driver, not the PCL version, frequently dies, and makes it impossible to print in a session. The way to get around that is: REBOOT. What a nightmare! Even if the printer driver doesn't die, you may get the message that there is not enough memory or the disk drive is too busy to print. The price of the HP LaserJet 5L is so low that it's irresistable. It's almost like the siren that lured those mariners to their destruction. Well, here I am in the trap. It's low for a very good reason, so DON'T DO IT if you can help it. So you think this may be a LIBEL? Well, TRUTH is a defense. You *must* use an IEEE1284 compliant cable. 2. Your parallel port must be *bidirectional*. Even HP tech support doesn't stress this enough. The easiest solution is to buy a EPP parallel Port, they are relatively cheap (about $20) and do nicely for the task at hand. I don't remember how much RAM it can take, but I don't think it can be upgraded much above the amount it comes with. There is no power switch - it uses an "instant-on" feature, then it goes to sleep when there is no input for 15 minutes. The 4MP is 600dpi and is the Mac/Postscript version of the 4P, has a control panel and can accept much more total memory using industry standard 72-pin SIMMs. It can be turned off completely, or it can be left in a mode that will save power after a period of no activity. The paper tray can also handle a lot more paper than the one in the 4L/MP. Though the 4L was a good choice for me, I don't think the 4ML would be a good choice for someone who wants to use a Postscript printer. It's too slow for one thing, and there may be a problem getting enough RAM into it to do complex printing. Unless the price is really low, you will probably be sorry you bought it. You might try browsing the HP web site for more info, but the info for older models is usually removed when new models come out. Since the 4L/ML have been out of production for a couple of years, there may not be much left there to see, except for some driver upgrades. HP developed a free cleaning kit to fix it (basically a mechanical device to scrub the rollers and some software). BTW we have > commented out all references in the /var/spool/lp/interface script that > references PJL. You are using the wrong script for this old printer. JetAdmin assumes that you have long since scrapped your LaserJet II and III printers so the script (which is actually located at a lower level in /var/spool/lp/interface/model.orig). JetAdmin does not have a suitable printer script in it's choices but you can specify a different script to use. Delete the printer and re-add it using JetAdmin but modify the choice for a script to read: laserjet (not laserjetIIISi) and save that config. PJL is a hardware control language that came long after the early LaserJets were obsolete. By using laserjet as a script, you'll still have access to several options such as landscap and portrait mode and font characteristics. Use lp -ooptions to print a quick list pof options supported by this script. -- ? /'^'\ ( o o ) *====oOOO===(_)===OOOo======*=====================================* | Bill Hassell | Hewlett-Packard Response Center | | SysAdmin Oooo. | blh@atl.hp.com / Atlanta, GA. | *======.oooO===( )========*=====================================* ( ) ) / "There are two types of computer users in the \ ( (_/ world...those that have lost data, and those \_) that are going to." If it's an HP printer, yes, yes you do. Using HP's JetDirect software eliminates ALL of the headaches you're having, and makes setting up the printer a breeze. > Also, it is part of a number of PCs on a network as the normal > printer and all other stuff prints out fine (from Word/ our own > applications/web browsers etc - even text files). Saying, "But it works okay on my PC," doesn't mean diddly to a UNIX box. The printer was designed for PCs [primarily], and comes with PC drivers, so of course it's going to work fine on a PC! A PC text file ends each line with a carriage-return and linefeed, while UNIX text files only have "newlines," interpreted by an HP printer as a linefeed only. This is where the stair-stepping comes from. It's been a "feature" of HP printers for as long as HP printers have been attached to UNIX systems. > I would guess that it is the printer driver under Solaris that > is causing all the idiosyncrasies .. :( That's the thing. There are no "printer drivers" per se in UNIX. Could the printer have Postscript support, yet it's >disabled from the printer's front panel? I don't think that the 2100xx series has a "front panel". HP apparently expects you to set everything up using Jetadmin/ Jetdirect/ Webwossit. It used to be that HP licenced Adobe Postscript[TM] from, well, Adobe. As such Postscript was an extra cost item for their printers. Eventually HP got pissed off with Adobe's licencing policies and bought a PS clone from one of the better PS clone makers. Since then PS emulation has been included free in all their latest printers. In fact, if I remember correctly, starting with the 2100 or 2200 series, you couldn't order a model *without* PS emulation even if you wanted to. Anyway, I think the print server software on the HP laser printers is rather limited. In practice, I've found it more efficient to use either unix or netware servers as print servers to collect print jobs and then to forward those jobs to the laserjets over a single connection each. Managing print queues on a proper print server is also significantly easier. YMMV.
